“Gardens of Sinope”
2024

The project aims to encourage the residents of Sinop to engage in intergenerational and intercultural knowledge sharing about “gardens” and to create collective spaces for reflection, fostering a future that is harmonious and sensitive to nature. It seeks to protect and revive the local flora, which is disappearing due to rapidly increasing urbanization in the city center, while promoting the development of new sustainable practices.

The project, which progresses in harmony with ecological cycles, began in early spring as nature awoke, with the visit of one hundred gardens in the city center and the planting of saplings of fruit trees unique to the region. Along with the green spaces squeezed between the apartment buildings in the city center, saplings native to the area were planted in the gardens of the Historical Prison. In the upper garden:

Russian olive, sour cherry, pomegranate, peach, white cherry, mandarin, quince, almond, sour pomegranate, cornelian cherry, lemon, olive;

In the lower garden:

crab apple, cherry, satsuma, linden, sugar pear, orange, quince, Iskilip apple, medlar, serviceberry, black plum, cornelian cherry, quince, and bakery pear were added.

The nameplates in front of the saplings will display the stories and names that visitors to Sinop have dreamed up for the trees. These trees will continue to exist as living beings with which guests have established a personal connection, while also serving as an up-to-date archive of Sinop’s biodiversity.

Thanks for the support and collaborations: Sinop Municipality Parks and Gardens Directorate, Sinop Provincial Directorate of Culture, Sinop University Landscape Unit, Sinop Provincial Directorate of Food, Agriculture, and Livestock, Sinop Provincial Directorate of Agriculture and Forestry, “Spaces for Culture” and the Sinopale team.

The “Gardens of Sinope” project is realized with contributions from “Spaces for Culture” and Sinopale.
