Eco-Archive
2024
Installation, local trees, soil, fruits, stories, research, storage containers, treasure cabinet
The Eco-Archive seeks to shed light on the rich biodiversity of Sinop’s local flora, which is rapidly disappearing due to urbanization in the city center. By showcasing botanical specimens and their stories, this archive preserves the diversity that has thrived for centuries in Sinop’s fertile gardens. Local plant species, which have grown in these gardens for generations, are displayed as treasured assets, now under protection.
The exhibit serves as a reminder that plants are not merely natural entities but also an integral part of our cultural memory and social identity. By bridging the past and future, the Eco-Archive emphasizes the fragility of these valuable resources and the importance of preserving them for generations to come.
As an extension of the “Sinope’s Gardens” sustainable urban project, the Eco-Archive encourages Sinop’s residents to engage in intergenerational and intercultural knowledge sharing about local biodiversity. It also sparks essential dialogues around the protection and preservation of this natural heritage, fostering a harmonious and mindful future in balance with nature.
By planting saplings of a selection of trees representing this rich flora in the Historical Prison Garden, it creates a current archive of Sinop's biodiversity.
*The Gardens of Sinope project is realized with the support of Spaces for Culture as part of Sinopale 9.
